At Forge Valley School & Sixth Form, A Level History enables students to develop a sophisticated understanding of the forces that have shaped societies, governments and cultures over time. Through the study of British, American and European history, students explore themes such as power, conflict, democracy, social change and identity, while examining how historians interpret and debate the past. The course encourages students to think critically about historical events and their significance, helping them understand the complex relationship between the past and the modern world.
Across the Sixth Form curriculum, students investigate major periods of political, social and cultural change, including Stuart Britain, post-war America and modern Germany. They engage with a wide range of historical sources, interpretations and scholarly debates, developing the ability to analyse evidence, evaluate competing arguments and construct independent judgements. As their studies progress, students move beyond knowledge acquisition towards a deeper engagement with historiography, historical enquiry and interpretation.
A Level History develops highly valued transferable skills including critical thinking, research, analysis, evaluation and communication. Through extended essay writing, source analysis and independent research, including the Non-Examined Assessment (NEA), students learn to construct persuasive arguments supported by precise evidence. These skills prepare students for higher education and a wide range of careers, including law, politics, journalism, education, public service, business and research, while supporting them to become informed, reflective and intellectually curious citizens.
