At Forge Valley School & Sixth Form, Philosophy & Ethics enables students to engage with some of the most profound questions about human existence, morality, belief and meaning. Through the study of philosophy, ethics and theology, students explore a wide range of ideas and perspectives while developing the ability to think critically, analyse complex arguments and evaluate competing viewpoints.
Students investigate key philosophical topics including arguments for the existence of God, religious experience, the problem of evil, the nature of the soul, religious language and the relationship between faith and reason. In ethics, they explore influential theories such as Natural Law, Utilitarianism, Kantian Ethics and Situation Ethics, applying these approaches to contemporary moral issues. The theology component develops students' understanding of Christian beliefs, practices and debates, encouraging them to engage with questions surrounding human nature, morality, religious pluralism, gender and the role of religion in modern society.
The course develops highly valued skills in critical thinking, independent research, analysis, evaluation and academic writing.
