KS3

The Languages Department is staffed by enthusiastic, creative and experienced teachers. We offer pupils stimulating and dynamic lessons where key language skills are practised whilst providing opportunities to explore cultural differences. All pupils study Spanish at KS3.

The department is very well resourced with the latest course books, interactive audio-visual resources and online packages. We also employ Foreign Language Assistants to enable our pupils to have authentic contact with the language they study and to practise their auditory skills in small groups.

We also offer an extra-curricular French club after school for budding linguists who wish to continue studying the language they learnt at primary or who wish to learn a second foreign language.

We offer an Exchange Programme for our Year 9 pupils to Plasencia in Eastern Spain. This involves a week-long visit to Spain, followed by a return visit from our Spanish partners, with Forge Valley parents also being involved in the English leg of the partnership. We have developed a very strong link with our partner school IES Gabriel y Galán, which we are looking to further strengthen over the coming years. This is an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop their spoken language skills as well as getting a real insight into Spanish culture.

KS4

GCSE Spanish

Spanish is a very popular subject at Key Stage 4 with pupils building on the skills they developed at Key Stage 3. We follow the AQA course which covers four main themes:

• Lifestyle

• Leisure

• Education and Work

• Home and Environment.

Pupils have to complete two pieces of Controlled Assessment in Speaking and two pieces of Controlled Assessment in Writing, with each piece being worth 15% of the final GCSE grade. These pieces of Controlled Assessment are conducted throughout years 10 and 11. Final examinations at the end of Year 11 are taken in Reading and Listening. These equate to the remaining 40% of the GCSE grade.

The four main topic areas are studied in greater depth than at KS3, with the key foci being to develop skills in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. As well as having access to a range of materials and resources, time is built into the course to work in small groups with our Foreign Language Assistants, both during lesson time and in after school additional support sessions.

We offer an Exchange Programme for our Year 10 pupils to Plasencia in Eastern Spain. This involves a week-long visit to Spain, followed by a return visit from our Spanish partners. We have developed a very strong link with our partner school IES Gabriel y Galán, which we are looking to further strengthen over the coming years. This is an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop their spoken language skills as well as getting a real insight into Spanish culture.
